Oasis Diary - December 1, 2002
First Day of Winter, 2002

I awoke this morning to the first day of Winter. Not meteorologically or by the calendar, but this morning brought Winter here at The Oasis none the less.
Although the early morning temperatures hovered around 50…and they do get far colder and have already this season…I recognized Winter today.
The morning is blanketed by thick fog. The fog is so deep that one cannot see to the end of the orchard. It is a Japanese painting of black and white, treeless limbs reaching toward the sky, disappearing into the near horizon only a few hundred feet away. Of course the surrounding mountains and even the cliffs across the river are lost. Just a soft white-gray softness, which reaches from ground to sky. The fog is so stilling and deep that the birds stay silent. A wild raven sits in the ground.

The Oasis has been fortunate this season. Winter has been soft and kind overall. Our daytime temperatures have stayed in the 80's until the past few days, when this slow winter storm dipped down and swung through our valley. Within a few days, we are promised, the daytime temperatures will again be in the 70's. It has been so mild that until now most of our birds have not even needed nighttime cover…although I am sure they will soon.

The seasons come and go seamlessly…all five that we have here in the Desert Southwest…Winter, Spring, Summer, Monsoon and Autumn. The rhythm of life, the daily feeding of the vast number of birds, the cleaning, the plans for the future, the building and planting, this rhythm, like a heartbeat, is strong and steady.
This morning brought another Winter and its quiet days.
