Oasis Diary - June, 2003

Summer approaches. The afternoon temperatures have soared into the high nineties....and more....for a few weeks. Our workday begins earlier. We break mid-day after feeding and we rest before afternoon cleaning and all the last minute checks of the day.

Southwest summer siesta.

Early monsoon-like thunderstorms have brought wind and much needed rain. Lightning awakens fears of fires and we plan fire drills. The Newcastle's (END) threat remains a daily constant, but the heat and sun are a blessing, drying and killing off the threat ever so slowly. Still no new birds allowed. We all miss our guests. But all the animals, the birds in particular, are safe and healthy here.

The prototype Aviary begun seven months ago approaches completion. We begin landscaping and walkways, waterfalls and bathing pools, next week. Soon the Cockatiels, grass-keets, Budgies and more will revel in their new freedom. We are all excited....

On a personal note: I, too, have begun something special for the birds who share their lives in my home with me. A new bird room, long planned, long awaited, has finally begun construction. Within a month the birds who call my home theirs will have a wonderful new, light and airy, room designed, planned and built particularly for them.

Summer approaches. Three years ago this month (June) we found this property and went into escrow. Three years ago we set our sights and made our plans, turned our eyes, hopes, dreams and goals to this incredible piece of the southwest we call home.
