Job opening at The Oasis Sanctuary – Begins early March 2010The Oasis Sanctuary is seeking another dedicated Animal Caregiver to join our committed and hard-working team of bird and “other critter” lovers. This job will begin in early March, but requires that the candidates come out to Volunteer for a week to see whether this is what you want to do, where you want to live and whether you and Staff are a “match.” (If you have already volunteered in the past, this will be an advantage for you. )
Oasis will provide a very private 400 square foot studio-style cabin with most utilities as part of the compensation package. Pay begins at $8 an hour (before taxes) and after three months there is a group medical package.
Job requirements include but are not limited to:
You must have the ability to work under various outdoor conditions: rain, cold, heat.
You must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. Age is secondary to strength and endurance.
Experience working with birds is helpful, and working with large numbers of animals is also beneficial. But experience with large numbers of parrots is secondary to the right attitude and willingness to learn. We will train you to The Oasis Standards of Care. The position is permanent and full-time, 40+ hours weekly. Candidates must be able to work well with others under a variety of conditions and in an often emotional (birds do get ill, injured or die) environment.
The Oasis Sanctuary is located in the San Pedro River Valley, a beautiful but VERY remote and rural location. The closest town (Benson) and therefore the closest stores etc. are 40 minutes away. Candidates must be able to entertain themselves in a rural setting.

WELCOME TO THE NEW OASIS SANCTUARY WEBSITE
We'd like to welcome you to the new Oasis Sanctuary web-site. We are still in the process of updating all info, so please bear with us and if there's something you see that seems to need correcting, please feel free to contact us at webmaster@the-oasis.org. We welcome your input and will of course consider any constructive concepts. We hope you enjoy our many new features and look forward to hearing from you.
The Oasis Sanctuary is a life-care facility for captive Exotic birds. In particular we are a refuge for parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other Psittacine birds (predominantly CITES I and II endangered birds), although we do accept Passerines (finches and canaries), Columbiformes (doves and "fancy" or racing pigeons), and other captive avian species. We offer birds a stable and loving home for the duration of their natural lives.
As a true sanctuary, we do not offer birds for adoption, however we work with and refer birds requiring re-homing to bona fide adoption programs around the country.
Many of The Oasis birds come from other rehabilitation and/or adoption programs where qualified personnel have determined that it is not in the bird's best interests to be placed in private homes. Some of our birds have "special needs", are physically handicapped or challenged requiring unique living or feeding situations. Others have been bounced from home to home, often being physically and/or emotionally abused and have simply become too fearful of people to be companions to people any longer.
The Oasis Sanctuary is proud to be the first exotic bird sanctuary to have received dual accreditation from the American Sanctuary Association (ASA) and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS).
The Oasis Sanctuary was incorporated in the State of Arizona on May 22, 1997. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Federal EIN number is 86-0885646. We are also registered with the Secretary of State in Arizona as a recognized charity.

Friday, October 9, 2009, we at last were ready to move the cockatoo
females into the Phoebe Aviary, funded and named in honor of Neal &
Pat Rudikoff's beloved Moluccan Cockatoo,
Phoebe, who passed on to the rainbow bridge in March of 2006. It was an
exciting and emotional experience for all of us. We moved a total of 15
females in at this time, and are carefully monitoring their behavior
and adjustment. Most were definitely awed by the move and unsure of how
exactly they came to suddenly have so much freedom, and so many friends
to suddenly choose from. It will be interesting to observe how their
