Other Faces At The Oasis

As anyone who has ever visited or worked at a Sanctuary can attest to (whether it is a bird sanctuary like The Oasis, or an elephant sanctuary, or a primate sanctuary), for some reason all sorts of other animals find their way to live there.

Although The Oasis only takes financial responsibility for the 350 birds who live here, we thought you might like to know the stories of some of the other animals who have either come with employees as their companions...or simply shown up, abandoned, at The Oasis doorstep. Sybil and TJ have taken some these animals into their homes, or have worked with Arizona based no-kill shelters and adoption programs to help place them.

Living on site in January 2003, in addition to the birds are:

• Eighteen CATS ranging in age from approximately 2 years to 13 years. UPDATE!! An abandoned mom and three kittens (now 2+ months old) were born in our hay barn. All kittens have been adopted!! THANK YOU!!
• Ten DOGS ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years. Three of these dogs are currently living in the field with the birds as Predator Control.
• One 6 year old Bureau of Land Management DONKEY - Apple - who is "lead sheep" to two elderly SHEEP...
• Three HORSES- Two 21-year-old's, Spud and Casey and handicapped 3.5 yr old Morgan named Gypsy
• Two Nigerian Dwarf GOATS...the neutered male, Cassidy, arrived at three days of age and was bottle fed. The female, Trixie is true to her name. Just recently adopted, she turned out to be pregnant and will be having babies as you read!! UPDATE!!The baby goats are now 6-7 months old. Their names are Eeore, Leno and Luna.
• Three large turkeys, a female and two males. Their names are Sam, George and Martha.
• And three Hens.
